πŸ“š Books Worth Your Time

I Will Teach You to Be Rich by Ramit Sethi
Nonfiction: Personal Finance, Money

I've seen this million-copy bestseller on bookshelves for years and finally picked up a copy. Even though I have my MBA, this book still taught me a lot about investing, 401ks, IRAs, and more.

Close to Shore by Michael Capuzzo
Nonfiction: Nature, Sharks

Did you know that in 1916, a great white shark killed 4 people in a 2-week killing spree off the Jersey Shore? Insane!

The first 100 pages of the book offer an interesting backstory on 1900s America and sharks. Then the killing starts.

πŸ§‘β€πŸ’Ό Quick Leadership Takeaway

πŸ—£οΈ "If you will first help people get what they want, they will help you get what you want." -Zig Ziglar

One of the biggest ways to destroy trust as a leader is to take undue credit for your direct reports' work.

New managers are especially susceptible because they often lack confidence and want to score victories with the higher-ups.

Here's my warning: DON'T DO IT!

Instead, do this:

  • When someone helps you with a challenging problem, give them credit. Thank them and tell others.
  • Share positive feedback in 1-on-1s and give kudos in team meetings.
  • Praise your top performers in front of your boss and the company higher-ups.

Raising the profile of your team members simultaneously raises your profile as their leader.

As my friend James says, β€œIf you make everyone on your team successful, how can you not be successful?”

πŸ€“ A Personal Tidbit

My youngest brother Shawn has been in town the past few days. It's been a great weekend full of our favorite things: movies, baseball, and good food.

We watched The Odyssey (my second time seeing it), hit a few breweries and restaurants, and walked around my Seattle neighborhood of Fremont.

But the highlight was catching two Mariners games against the Chicago Cubs, and the Mariners won BOTH with dramatic walk-off hits. They were two of the best games I've ever watched in person.

The Mariners still have an outside shot at making the playoffs this year, but we'll need a solid final month to pull it off. Go M's!

Sincerely,

πŸ‘ Special Thanks To...

I'm excited about today's sponsor. I've been reading their newsletter every morning for the past 2 years. (It's basically the only news I consume.)

Years ago, I had stopped following the news because it just made me mad. Everything seemed bleak, biased, or angering, so I tapped out.

But that changed when my friend Aaron told me about a free newsletter called 1440. He said it's "just the facts"β€”no commentary and no slant. So I checked it out, and as it turns out...he's right!

Almost 5 million people subscribe. Check it out below. (It's totally free.)
